6 Major Benefits and Uses of Angelica Essential Oil

1. Ease Anxiety

Everyday life can be a busy stress-inducing time. There are hundreds of decisions to be made, either at work or home and sometimes this task can seem overwhelming. This is when your body begins producing hormones such as cortisol in reaction to the stress, to try and help you deal with it. However, sometimes we are facing prolonged stress and anxiety that requires some assistance with returning to a more relaxed state. Angelica essential oil has been shown to have relaxing effects that ease the symptoms of anxiety particularly. The chemicals found in angelica allow the brain to process the hormones properly so that anxiety levels are lowered naturally. (1)

Angelica blends well with citrus oils and would make a relaxing complement to the energy provided by oils such as orange or lemon. Diffusing with an uplifting oil may help combat the exhaustion that accompanies chronic anxiety.

2. Alleviate Digestive Issues

The standard American diet leads to a variety of stomach issues including excessive gas or cramping. There are hundreds of over the counter treatments to mask the pain of the problem but don’t usually solve the problem itself. Angelica essential oil has been shown to prevent the production of methane gas, the by-product of digestion. The effect may help relieve flatulence or pain caused by the overproduction of gas in the digestive tract. It may also soothe the muscle of the stomach and intestines as well, easing cramping. (2)

It is recommended to apply angelica to the abdomen in a mix of carrier oil and other digestive oils such as peppermint. This may help clear up any gas bubbles that are causing pain and relieve flatulence as well.

3. Anti-Bacterial

New sicknesses and diseases are being discovered and treated every day, leaving traditional medicine to develop ways to help people prevent the spread of these diseases in their homes and other environments. However, the current treatments tend to come with undesirable side effects and can be dangerous if overused, even resulting in the creation of stronger bacterium and viruses. The properties of Angelica include antimicrobial actions that are effective against bacteria such as listeria and salmonella, both that can be found in raw food and transferred to hard surfaces during food preparation. (3)

Use angelica oil as part of a kitchen cleaning spray along with natural vinegar and other citrus oil to control the spread of foodborne diseases.

4. Assist with Breathing Issues

Breathing issues have many different causes, but essential oils can assist with not only the causes but the symptoms and even assist in improving the condition. This includes conditions such as asthma and allergies as well as coughs from diseases such as the common cold and bronchitis. The limonene and pinene constituents of angelica lead to the production of mucus in the airways. This may lead to a more productive cough, clearing away infected mucus and allowing for easier breathing. It is also anti-inflammatory and may help ease the irritation caused by dry cough. (4)

6. Promote Liver Function

The liver is one of the central organs of the digestive system. It is critical in how the body filters toxins from the blood and metabolizes medicine, but these medicines may unintentionally cause damage to the liver itself even as it heals other parts of the body. These properties may even prevent the medicine from being changed into chemicals which do damage to liver tissue. (6)

My Favorite Uses For Angelica Essential Oil

My family loves being in the outdoors. Whether it is simply enjoying a night out on the deck or traipsing through the woods, we do like to get out into nature. However, as nice as nature is to look at, it also wreaks havoc with our seasonal allergies. We run the gamut of symptoms as well, sometimes with runny eyes and noses, other times with dry hacking coughs.

These dry coughs are when I start adding angelica oil to my diffuser blend along with eucalyptus and rosemary. This helps create mucus, so my lungs and muscles don’t ache after hours of unproductive coughing. Eucalyptus also loosens the protective mucus, so there’s no build up. Using this particular mix seems to help the coughing phase of seasonal allergies pass more quickly.

This diffusing mix is also helpful in reducing allergic reactions in our home since angelica has antimicrobial properties that are effective against bacteria and molds that float around in the air. Between our air filters and the diffuser being used daily, our air is as clean as possible. I use a topical application as well when I know I’m going to be around a lot of freshly bloomed flowers and the invisible cloud of pollen that comes with them and the spring.
