I keep it around to help me with everything from skin and hair problems to helping my older dog get around easier. I knew they would work for my mom to make her more comfortable, and I wanted to share them with you so you could use them to help improve your family’s quality of life.

The Top 5 Essential Oils with Anti-Inflammatory Properties

1. Orange Oil

Orange oil has been tested in medical trials as an agent to help reduce inflammation associated with arthritis. (1) Oranges are citrus, and they’re packed full of naturally-occurring antioxidants. These antioxidants are an important part of a person’s diet if they have arthritis or an inflammatory disease because they can help to fight the inflammation and stiffness that is so common with these types of diseases or chronic conditions. These naturally-occurring antioxidants are present in orange oil, and simply rubbing it into the affected area is enough to help interrupt the immune system’s inflammatory response. This can lead to reduced inflammation and swelling around the area, and less pain and stiffness.

Orange oil also helps fight against free radicals and the damage they can cause to the skin and body, and it’s also a great anti-bacterial. This is great if you have kids around that seem to catch every bug and sickness that goes around because orange oil was tested against 22 different strains of bacteria, and the tests showed that it was an effective agent when it came to fighting against all 22 strains. But, orange oil can be very strong, so before you rub it into your skin or use it topically, it’s a good idea to dilute it. You can use water, coconut oil, or olive oil and dilute it to the following ratios:

One Percent Dilution:

  • One Percent Dilution: Six drops orange oil to 30mL carrier oil

Two Percent Dilution:

  • Two Percent Dilution: 12 drops orange oil to 30mL carrier oil

Three Percent Dilution:

  • Three Percent Dilution: 18 drops of orange oil to 30mL carrier oil

2. Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil is great for reducing inflammation, and it has several other important health benefits as well. It contains a powerful healing agent called limonene along with menthol, and these can be great for healing scrapes and cuts. As a parent, you know how many small cuts and scrapes your kids can get from playing all day.

Limonene is naturally found in peppermint leaves and can help to reduce any inflammation around your child’s cuts or scrapes. It also encourages new cell growth and has several properties that help to repair the skin and speed up healing time. (4)

Peppermint oil is also a natural anesthetic, and it has natural pain relieving properties, and it’s a very versatile oil. You can use it topically to help reduce the aches and pains that come with arthritis or other inflammatory conditions, and it also works on injuries or areas that recently experienced trauma. I was afraid the oil would sting when I put it around my kid’s cuts, but the menthol in the oil numbed the skin, so it was painless to use.

The menthol content in peppermint oil acts as a counterirritant. This means that you can apply it to your skin and the menthol won’t necessarily treat the pain you feel, but it’ll change how your brain processes it. Basically, you’re distracting your brain from the pain and inflammation of your affected area. Ginger is a very popular oil to help reduce inflammation, and it has a long history stretching back over 5,000 years. (6) It’s a very popular anti-arthritic treatment because it has several purposes. It works to reduce inflammation, but it also prevents joint damage or inflammation from happening in the first place. (7)

Ginger oil contains enzymes that can prevent damage to your DNA molecules and reduce the amount of oxidative stress in your body. Oxidative stress is a direct contributor to the inflammation and swelling that is common with arthritis, along with cartilage damage. So, because it lowers these naturally, it can help to prevent arthritis.

Ginger itself is a very versatile spice, and you can use it in a variety of ways. You can use the oil extracts as a topical solution and rub it into your skin over the affected area. You can also take ginger supplements, and people eat it several ways including candied, ground, pickled, preserved, or as a cooking spice. (8) Personally, we love to use ginger in our cooking to give our dishes a slightly spicy and sweet taste.

4. Frankincense Oil

Frankincense is also called Boswellia, and it has several inflammation reducing qualities. It’s a good choice to help treat common rheumatoid arthritis symptoms like swelling and inflammation. But, you can also use it for general aches, pains, and inflammation that occur in everyday life. This oil comes from the Boswellia tree in India.

Frankincense is great for stopping the natural breakdown of cartilage in your joints as well. I know that I can feel it when I chase my children around all day and get up and down to play with them. My knees especially start to ache by the end of the day, and Frankincense oil helps to keep my cartilage hydrated and healthy. (9)

I like to use natural pain relieves whenever I can, and Frankincense oil is great for helping me get rid of my small aches and pains. I gave it to my mother to use as well, and she said that she is moving around and walking much better since she started using it every day. It can help to protect her joints as well as her muscles and tendons so she can go outside and play with her grandkids without feeling sore later on. (10)

Lavender oil is an extremely popular choice to help treat inflammation, and it smells fantastic too! My Inflammatory-Fighting Essential Oil Experience

As I touched on earlier, I like to use essential oils in my everyday life in a variety of ways. I like to fill a spray bottle with one cup of vinegar, one cup of water, and around 10 to 15 drops of lavender oil. I use this to disinfect my kid’s playroom along with my countertops and tables. It leaves the rooms smelling fresh and clean, and it kills any bacteria, so my kids stay healthy.

When I found out that peppermint oil is an effective way to help treat minor cuts and scrapes, I was a little worried that it would sting when I put it around the cut. But, I found out that if I diluted it by putting six teaspoons of water in a bowl and adding 12 drops of peppermint oil. This, combined with the menthol in the peppermint oil made a pain-free solution that cleaned and disinfected as well as helped the cuts and scrapes heal faster.

My family has always liked the taste of ginger, so we do use it quite a bit when we cook some of our favorite dishes. We love the warm and slightly peppery taste that we get when we add it in, and we use both fresh and dried. It’s great in cooking and baking, and it has a wonderful smell that lingers.
