True health is the greatest gift you can give yourself and your family. An aromatherapy set is a great way to introduce the benefits of essential oils to your family.

Let’s take a look at how to get the most out of essential oils. I’ve also included five mini-reviews of the best aromatherapy kits for beginners.

What is Aromatherapy?

Our world is filled with smells – and those aromas can have a powerful effect on both our bodies and minds. Aromatherapy is the use of scents to provide emotional and therapeutic benefits.

Essential oils allow anyone to access the powerful effects of various plant fragrances. These oils are made from distilled plants.

Different essential oils have different effects. You’ll want a collection of different essential oils in your home so you can treat different health conditions as they arise.

Of course, building a collection of different essential oils can feel like a daunting task for anyone new to aromatherapy. Beginners usually prefer buying an aromatherapy kit which contains a wide range of different oils to choose from.

I’ll help you choose the best aromatherapy kit just a bit later on. For now, let’s take a deeper look at what essential oils are and how they’re created.

How Are Essential Oils Created?

Essential oils are the pure essence of a plant. They’re made from the flowers, bark, leaves, seeds, stems, roots or other parts of a plant.

The oils are distilled from the plant using either water or steam. Even though they’re called “oils,” they can vary considerably in texture from clear and watery to thick and dark. Colors vary, too.

Essential oils are very concentrated. You don’t need to use much to get big results This makes them a great value because even a tiny amount of oil can last a long time.

Difference Between Oils and Perfumes

Essential oils are not perfumes. Only essential oils are derived from plants. Perfumes and fragrances use artificial substances. Plus, perfume is dangerous to consume.

Watch out for perfumes masquerading as oils. If an “essential oil” has a very low price, it might be simply a fragrance.

Essential oils require a lot of organic material to produce. For instance, such one kilogram of essential rose oil. Producing essential oils is a fairly labor-intensive process.

Keep in mind that because essential oils aren’t fragrances, they don’t always smell amazing. Pure, concentrated plant materials can have a strong, often earthy smell.

Finding Quality Essential Oils

You should always choose an essential oil which provides a lot of information. The manufacturer should be able to tell you where the oil originated from.

You also want to look for great quality control during the manufacturing process. Are the oils made in a clean laboratory under the supervision of professionals? Are the organic products free from chemicals and toxins?

Prices of essential oils can vary pretty significantly. Factors which affect cost include the rarity of the plant, its country of origin, the amount of oil produced and more. Distillery methods will also change the price between manufacturers.

Distillery methods affect purity, which affects the oil’s effectiveness. Lower priced oils often have poor distillation methods, which means you actually need to use more of the oil to get the effects. Spending more up front of higher quality oils is actually more cost effective.

How to Use Essential Oils for Aromatherapy

Essential oils can be used in four different ways:

  • Applied to the skin
  • Inhaled
  • Added to a Bath
  • Ingested (under certain conditions)

Choosing the Right Application Method

How you apply essential oils depends on what issue you’re treating and what methods you prefer. Many essential oils are at least somewhat effective regardless of delivery method. For example, if an oil irritates your skin, you might want to try inhalation or ingestion.

However, the delivery method can increase or decrease an oil’s effectiveness. Unless you have an allergy or similar issue, here are the methods which generally work best for common situations:

Topical Application

Oils applied directly to your skin can provide both immediate and long-term relief from many skin conditions, muscle aches and similar issues. Topical application also works best for wound treatments, burns and other injuries.

There are tons of ways to apply oils topically. You can massage them directly into the skin using your fingers, a sponge, a compress or more.

Before applying oils topically, they first need to be diluted in what’s called a carrier substance. Three common carrier substances are vegetable oil, nut oil and water.

Generally, you want a concentration between three and five percent. For every teaspoon of carrier, add three drops of essential oil. This will make a three percent solution.

If you’re going to apply oil topically to a large area, use a one percent solution. Just one drop of oil per every teaspoon of oil will be fine. This lets you cover larger areas like your back, legs and so on.

When using water as a carrier, be sure to mix thoroughly. The oil and water often need quite of bit of agitation to create a smooth formula.

Breathing in the oils works well when they’re used for mood effects such as de-stressing and sleep enhancement. Inhalation is also the fastest delivery method so they work great when you need quick relief.

There are a few different ways you can inhale essential oils:

This device evaporates the oil. Some diffusers use water while other use heat. The essential oils aren’t burned directly, as that changes their effects.

Instead, the scent of the oil is diffused throughout the room. Aside from personal use, you’ll also see diffusers in yoga studios and similar settings.

Here’s a quick video showing a diffuser in action:

Dry Evaporation

This method is low-tech but effective. You simply add a few drops to a cotton ball or tissue. The oil will evaporate into the air. You can control the intensity.

If you want high intensity, sniff the cotton ball directly. For more consistent exposure, place the cotton ball on a nearby desk so the aroma can waft through the room.

Drops are added to a bowl of steaming water. This quickly vaporizes the oil. You can then place a towel over your head, lean forward over the bowl and inhale.

The aroma can be pretty strong as this delivers the most potent dose of oil. You’ll want to use no more than one or two drops. Also, be sure to keep your eyes closed when using this method.

Vaporized oil is often a great treatment for respiratory ailments including sinus infections. It can provide fast relief for a stuffed nose.

Finally, you can simply add the oil to any water-based solution. Place the solution in a spray bottle for an easy room freshener.

You can change sprays easily throughout the year. For instance, try a solution of pine needle oil to create a holiday feeling through the home. Essential oil sprays can also help keep items clean.

Add essential oils to the bathtub to combine the benefits of both inhalation and topical absorption. Baths work to relax your mind and body. Many bath blends include a variety of different essential oils.

For instance, to create a blend which soothes sore muscles, try a combination of 10 Lavender oil drops, five Peppermint drops, five drops of Orange and a handful of Epsom salt.

Ingesting essential oil does have health benefits, but you don’t want to do this on your own. Only ingest essential oils under the supervision of a health professional.
