Black Spruce Essential Oil Benefits

Most pine and related trees have been used as part of natural therapies for centuries. Black spruce pine essential oil may be what you are looking for when it comes to natural treatments for breathing and even increasing your focus.

1. Helps with easy breathing

Breathing can be affected by many factors, including irritants in the environment, mold for example, or infection caused by bacteria or viruses. Symptoms can include cough or chest tightness due to increased mucus production. The constituent bornyl acetate found in black spruce essential oil has been studied for its anti-inflammatory effects on smooth tissue like that which is found in the lungs and airways. Reducing inflammation, in turn, reduces the amount of mucus produced by the body to soothe the irritation of the lungs. The black spruce essential oil also has antiseptic properties that can kill the molds and bacteria responsible for allergies. These irritants can be floating in the air and the soft surfaces of your home. (1)

2. Tonic and stimulating

It may seem counterproductive to increase stimulation and focus by relaxing, but stress and anxiety can have an enormous impact on our energy and ability to focus. With an essential oil like black spruce, it has an effect on the hormones produced in the brain that regulate stress and our bodily reactions to it. A 2011 study found that inhalation of bornyl acetate, a primary constituent of black spruce oil, produced a calming effect in stressful situations and contributed to a feeling of increased focus and energy. 3. Relaxing and calming

Stress and anxiety seem to be an ever-increasing part of our everyday lives. Whether it comes from work or the push to spend quality time with your family, we sometimes feel pulled in multiple directions. This can lead to a feeling of fatigue and being unable to focus on the task at hand. Black spruce essential oil has been shown to have an effect on our body’s response to stress. It helps to reduce the adrenal effect and how our body processes the stress hormone cortisol. (3) With these chemicals more in balance, we find that we are able to handle stressful situations better.

4. Soothing Sore Muscles

Muscle aches are part of the human condition, either from everyday tasks like climbing the stairs or strenuous activities like working out. Our go-to for relief from these aches and strains often come with undesirable side effects or can only be used on a limited basis. Natural supplemental therapies like black spruce essential oil may have fewer negative qualities. A 2004 study found that the chemical bornyl acetate in oils like black spruce has an analgesic effect on muscles as well as soothing spasms in the smooth muscles of the digestive and respiratory tract. The topical application of this oil may block pain signals along nerves, allowing relief from muscle aches and strains. (4)

My Favorite Uses For Black Spruce Essential Oil

I must admit that I probably have more oils that come from types of pine trees than any other oils. I’m almost embarrassed about my love of the scent of evergreen conifers. I totally blame my childhood of having live trees sitting in our living room for weeks before there were more needles on the floor than still on the boughs. I have fond memories of crawling under the tree and reading for hours as lights twinkled above me.

Now that I’m grown, I find that the scent of oils like black spruce pine can relax me on days when I’m in need of some pleasant memories along with the physical reactions my body has. I even diffuse it holiday time in our house, along with clove bud oil, to simulate real tree smell. (I do not like vacuuming pine needles. Sorry, kids.) I even feel that when I inhale those scents, my breathing is easier. This is especially evident during cold and flu season, and sickness is rampant in our home.

I’ll also add it to my pine, lemon, and tea tree surface cleaner. Lemon and pine will forever be associated as the smell of clean in my mind, and nothing makes me feel more accomplished than those scents gently diffusing throughout my kitchen after a deep clean.

Caution of Black Spruce Essential Oil

  • Be sure to store this oil in a dark container in a place that is out of direct sunlight to prevent oxidation of the oil. Tisserand and Young (2014) find that oil that has been oxidated is more likely to cause skin irritation, even in individuals that may not have had issues with a fresh sample of the oil.
  • Always choose quality Black Spruce essential oil from reputable suppliers.
  • Though skin irritation is likely low, always test on the underside of your arm before using it in larger applications.
