6 Major Benefits and Uses of Clary Sage Essential Oil

1. Clarify Skin

The hunt for clearer skin can be frustrating. You are faced with the choice of different chemicals, all of which have effects on your already inflamed skin. It’s trial and error to find the one that helps all the areas need. Clary sage is a known anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial that also helps control the production of the oil natural to your skin. This oil is often overproduced, causing clogged pores where bacteria fester and cause skin eruptions. (1, 2)

Using clary sage in your skin care routine can help reduce and control inflamed pores. Add a couple drops to witch hazel to clear and shrink pores with a natural astringent or use with lavender and castile soap for a gentle body wash.

2. Reduce Pain

As convenient as commercial painkillers can be, they come with side effects and warnings. Clary sage has been shown to be beneficial as a pain reliever, especially for menstrual cramps and during active labor since it affects smooth muscle contractions. When using clary sage labor may even be accelerated as components of clary sage oil can cause uterine contractions and reduce the pain of those contractions simultaneously. However, using clary sage oil to induce labor should be used under the advisement of your obstetrician or midwife. (3, 4)

Mix clary sage oil with a topical carrier such as sweet almond oil and use as a rub on the areas of pain during your menstrual cycle or any other aching part of the body. Inhaling the aroma has been shown to reduce pain and stress as well.

3. Alleviate Depression Symptoms

The amount of stress we feel in our lives, trying to meet deadlines and being active when the workday ends, can lead to feeling down or depressed. Using essential oils like clary sage may help with these symptoms. This oil has been shown to reduce cortisol, a stress hormone, as well as reducing inflammation in the body. This allows the brain to produce and process hormones properly, enabling an evening of the levels present in your body. (5)

Using clary sage oil benefits your mood, reducing your body’s reaction to stressors. Add to your diffuser with other oils such as chamomile and lavender for even more relaxing and mood-lifting benefits.

4. Improve Sleep Quality

One of the many symptoms of stress and depression is a change in frequency or quality of sleep. Many times, we find ourselves unable to relax enough to stop thinking about work or family, and these thoughts can keep us awake late at night. Clary sage has been shown to help reduce stress, especially the hormone cortisol, and inflammation in the brain, which may prevent the body from processing this hormone properly. (6)

Mix this oil with the carrier oil and apply it to the particularly tense areas of your body. The aroma may help alleviate the stress and relax any painful muscles you may be experiencing.

5. Lower Blood Pressure

Heart disease is one of the most common chronic health conditions in the nation today. This is usually accompanied by high blood pressure, which leads to further complications. One of the many clary sage oil uses is in the reduction of the stress hormone cortisol that, in turn, leads to a reduction in blood pressure. It may also assist in the regulation of hormones in the brain that are responsible for stress. (7)

This may be especially helpful in stressful situations such as visiting the doctor or just before a big deadline at work. Wearing a drop or two in a necklace charm may help you remain calm in stressful situations.

6. Assist in Hair Growth

There are different reasons as to why hair may seem to stop growing, fall out faster or seem more brittle. This may be because of the oils found on the scalp or hormonal changes as we age. As part of a collection of essential oils for hair growth recipe, clary sage was shown to encourage healthier hair, especially when used in conjunction with rosemary oil. Pores are cleared of oil so hair can begin the regrowth process and current hairs appear stronger. (8)

Apply clary sage oil directly to the scalp after diluting with the carrier oil such as coconut, which may also help with hair health. Add an equal amount of rosemary essential oil for the most benefits.

My Favorite Uses For Clary Sage Oil

It’s that time. The time everyone in your household dreads, but holds special significance for you since you get to experience it personally, once a month, for an entire week.

I’ve tried just about every recommended remedy, home and over the counter that you can think of for the cramps I experience. I spend hours hugging a hot water bottle that never stayed hot enough. I try acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen, but nothing ever really takes the edge away enough for me to be able to function like a decent human being.

When I came across the research for clary sage essential oil and its effect on cramps and menstrual pain, I was willing to try something new. I started by adding some to my diffuser with lavender and chamomile, my standbys for when the pain is at its worst. I could feel myself relaxing into my bed, enough so that I was no longer clinging to the hot water bottle for dear life.

After that, I wondered how using it as a topical massage would work for me. I always have sweet almond oil on hand, so I made a mix with about two drops of clary sage to a tablespoon of oil. I used this on my abdomen and upper thighs where the pains seem to be concentrated. The cramps were still there mind you but muted and at a much more livable level. Now I’ll always have a bottle ready, which my partner certainly appreciates.
