Juniper Berry Essential Oil Benefits

Juniper berry essential oil is an oil that has been utilized for its many benefits. Hospitals burned it along with rosemary as a natural antimicrobial, and it is still known today for killing bacteria and fungus. If you’re looking for an oil that can help keep your house cleaner and support cell health, this oil is a must for your collection.

1. Cleanse and purify the air

Though we often think of the cleanliness of the surfaces in our homes, most germs are airborne before they settle into our couches and onto our counters. Juniper berry essential oil may help control many of the molds and bacteria that are found in the air and can cause respiratory irritation, especially in people who have chronic medical conditions such as asthma. A study found that juniper berry oil is anti-bacterial by itself, but when used in conjunction with other oils, it can disinfect the air by killing bacteria, molds, and fungi that can be found in the house and the air. It has shown efficacy against even bacteria that are resistant to certain antibiotics. It is also effective against the bacteria that cause the breakdown of organic material and lead to unpleasant odors, helping to deodorize the air. (1)

2. Muscular and joint comfort

Joint and muscle pain may be caused by general overall use during a workday, but many people suffer from chronic conditions such as arthritis or other autoimmune diseases where the use of prescribed medications may not be wholly effective. Many modern treatments also come with undesired side effects or cannot be used for sustained periods. The primary component in juniper berry essential oil is a-pinene, which is a common component in oils used to ameliorate joint and muscle inflammation. Studies find that oils high in a-pinene are also topical analgesics, preventing the transmission of pain signals along nerve endings. (2)

3. Calming and grounding

Sleep is vital to healthy functioning, helping our bodies to process physically and mentally. Stress and tension in the day may lead to tense evenings and even lack of quality sleep as we struggle to come down from the rigors of the day. Juniper berry essential oil has been shown to work well with other oils known to have relaxing properties and can be used to promote relaxation. A study compared these effects to the use of benzodiazepines that are commonly prescribed for chronic insomnia. It was found to have similar properties, with none of the side effects found with the repeated use of sedatives. It may help reduce the need for benzodiazepines for use as a sleep aid. (3)

4. Antioxidant

Many environmental factors affect our health, and our understanding of those factors has led to the study of what causes cell damage and what natural substances found in plants can help prevent that damage. Free radicals are theorized to be unstable atoms that cause oxidation within our cells. This may appear as illness and may cause symptoms of premature aging on the skin. A 2014 study found that juniper berry essential oil worked in two possible ways against this oxidative damage. This oil contains constituents that promote natural scavenging characteristics of cells the production of natural chemicals in the body that prevent and heal cell damaged caused by free radicals. My Favorite Uses For Juniper Berry Essential Oil

When it comes to oils made from conifers, I’m a huge fan. I have a lot of very happy memories associated with trees such as cypress and juniper. I spent much of my childhood summering with my grandmother, who had low, full juniper bushes all around her house. They were perfect for crawling in and under, making ideal hiding places when you wanted to get away from the adults and cool off in the nearly complete shade.

Juniper berry essential oil reminds me of those days, making it one of my favorites when I need to unwind after a stressful day. It adds a woody note under florals such as lavender and chamomile but isn’t as powerful as pine or cypress. I’ve noticed less sneezy that happened at the height of rainy spring when mold was likely to form around a house that never seemed to dry out.

I also like to add a few drops to 1 ounce of liquid castile soap along a handful of Epsom salts to a warm bath once or twice a month, especially when anxiety starts to keep me up at night. It is a wonderful complement to my usual relaxing oils.
