May Chang Essential Oil Benefits

May chang essential oil may not be the most common oil, but it still boasts a number of benefits. If you’re looking for a lemony-scented oil that can help against bacteria, improve skin health, or calm your mood, then taking a chance with this oil may be worthwhile.

1. Antibacterial and Antifungal

Our lives are filled with environments that are rife with different kinds of bacteria and fungi, no matter how thoroughly we try to clean. In our efforts to keep our homes clean, we may inadvertently promote the creation of resistant bacteria and fungi. Essential oils like may chang are studied for their ability to ward off sickness in plants. A 2019 laboratory study showed the may chang was effective against MRSA, a resistant bacteria that can be hard to treat and even become life-threatening. The oil broke through the protective barrier around the bacteria, which may lead to either the destruction of the cell or the allowance of other antibiotic treatments to work. (1)

2. Skin health

As our first line of defense against invading bacteria, skin health is of the utmost importance. And our faces are generally the first impression we make on the world, and skin issues such as acne can take a toll on our health and even self-esteem. Many essential oils are beneficial for the skin and may chang fits into that category. It has been used for its mild astringent properties, which decreases pore size and can help control the production of sebum. A 2017 study also found that the use of may chang essential oil helped to reduce the appearance of acne by killing the bacteria trapped in skin pores and reducing the markers of inflammation. (2)

3. Anti-inflammatory

Inflammation is our body’s response to many different kinds of trauma, from physical wounds to illness. You may see it along with autoimmune disorders where the body attacks its own tissues. The inflammatory response is almost as varied, with swelling, redness, and fluid build-up. When it comes to the healing process, inflammation is the first issue that is dealt with. A 2015 study studied how the components of geraniol and neral help to reduce inflammatory markers in the body. (3) In conjunction with may chang’s antimicrobial and analgesic properties, this may make it a possible treatment for wounds.

4. Calming and uplifting

Stress and anxiety are an everyday affliction. It is certainly a unifying human condition with our lives full of work and family. This balance can lead to feelings of depression and anxiousness at times, and aromatherapy with essential oils may alleviate some of these issues. A study in 2012 focused on the effects of may chang essential oil with mice showed the sleep time increased when treated with a sedative and may chang. The mice were also put through a maze test with better accuracy. This test is designed to cause anxiety through choice, and the results imply that may chang has a positive effect on anxiety. (4)

My Favorite Uses For May Chang Essential Oil

I’ve made it a personal mission to try and replace as many cleaning products in my home as possible. This was daunting, especially as I began to realize exactly home many different cleaners I had hiding under my cabinet. And some I’d used exactly once and never touched again, but had them hiding under the sink anyway.

Using essential oils has made it possible to keep my family protected from foodborne pathogens as well as the germs the kids bring to and from school each day. I try to change up some of the oils I use, just because they are effective, but I don’t want to miss out on a particular benefit.

I came by may chang under the name litsea. It has many of the same antimicrobial properties as the citrus family and even shares the calming but focused potential as well. I add this to my linen spray with cypress, cedarwood, and distilled water to try and combat the odors left behind by pets taking up space on our couches when they think we don’t know.

It’s served as a mattress refresher as well between sheets changes. My partner tolerates the citrus scents since they don’t remind him of the flower box outside. Not that he doesn’t appreciate flowers, just not on his pillowcase.
