Niaouli essential oil is not nearly as common as its Australian cousin, tea tree, but it does have very similar benefits. They are both in the same family and have been used in folk medicine for centuries. Though not as well known, there are several proven benefits and uses of niaouli essential oil that may make it worth adding to your essential oil collection.

6 Major Benefits and Uses of Niaouli Essential Oil
1. Ease Anxiety
Anxiety is a natural reaction to an unknown situation, whether it be an upcoming event or a dreaded appointment, and it can interfere with how we function in our day. Since most anxiety is mild, there may be no reason to treat it with medical intervention, but it may be eased with essential oils like niaouli oil. This oil works to reduce the inflammation caused by the release of hormones in the brain and to allow the brain to process other hormones that help to soothe and release tension. (1)
Diffuse a few drops of niaouli oil with some lavender before you head into anxiety-inducing events. It may help you stay relaxed and improve your experience.
2. Repel Mosquitoes
As the public becomes more aware of the effects of commercially produced chemical repellents, there has been an increase in the search for more natural and less potentially toxic alternatives. Mosquito control is especially important due to their ability to carry infectious diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, and encephalitis. One of niaouli essential oil uses can be to repel insects when applied to the skin. (2)
Use niaouli oil with other repellents such as citronella to make an effective, natural spray to use during the summer months when insects are the most common.
3. Protect the Skin
There are many types of skin infections, and some are not bacterial or viral. These infections can be found on any part of the body such as between toes where it can be moist and hot, the perfect growth environment. Overuse of antifungal medications can lead to resistance, which makes it even harder to cure the infection if it recurs. Niaouli oil has been shown to be effective against different types of fungus and yeast, including candida. (3)
Add a few drops of niaouli oil to a carrier oil such as sweet almond and apply the area of fungal overgrowth. This may help reduce the fungus and may even prevent further infections.
4. Aid Antibiotics
As healthy as we try to be and despite the lengths we often go to to keep our environment free of germs, everyone gets sick. Sometimes, the sickness does require the use of traditional medicines such as antibiotics or antivirals. Oils such as niaouli have been shown to increase the effectiveness of prescribed antibiotics such as streptomycin and penicillin. This effect may reduce the length of time you suffer from sickness and allow the body to heal faster. (4)
Mix a few drops of niaouli essential oil with a carrier oil such as jojoba and apply near the site of the infection. This may help the antibiotics as they support your natural immune system in ridding your body of the foreign bacteria.
5. Prevent Burn Infections
Burns can be one of the most severe wounds that the body can suffer, especially since the skin is the first line of defense against foreign materials, bacterium, and viruses. Burns can damage multiple layers of the skin and may take a long time to heal, leaving the body vulnerable to sickness. Niaouli essential oil benefits you by preventing infections, particularly those bacteria which are found in or around burn sites. This allows your body time to heal without having to fight off infection as well. (5)
Apply a mix of niaouli oil and neutral carrier oil to a burn as it heals. This may help prevent an infection that leads to delayed healing and even scarring of the site.
6. Disinfect Your Home
Germs are everywhere, and now there are even some that have grown to be resistant to the chemicals that were developed to help kill them and keep our homes clean. To prevent this issue, many companies are now turning to essential oils and studying their antibiotic effects to replace harsh, toxic chemicals. Niaouli is effective against bacteria that comes from food and may even effective against airborne bacteria that can irritate the respiratory system. (6)
Niaouli can be used as a spray along with other cleaning oils like lemon to keep the hard surfaces in your home free of bacteria that can cause illness.
My Experience with Niaouli Essential Oil
Niaouli came to my attention a summer past while I was attempting to train our new dog in the art of not pulling on his leash. He is a rescue dog and hadn’t had any training except to know that the house is not his bathroom. Since I had a trainer confirm that he is a little bit crazy, I took it upon myself to work around that and take him on daily walks. However, he is still overly fascinated by the selection of wildlife around our house.
And by fascinated, I mean crazy about.
The first time he saw the neighbor’s cat, he yanked the leash from my hands so fast that I was left with second degree friction burns across the palm and three fingers. I don’t usually have issues with burns healing, but these became infected and were responding very slowly to the doctor prescribed oral antibiotics. I turned to my essential oils to help.
I applied a watered-down mix of niaouli oil and lavender to the reddest parts of the burns. While the niaouli essential oil smell is a bit more medicinal than woody, it blends very easily with stronger florals like lavender and citruses like lemon and orange. This helped reduce the inflammation, and the burns began healing at a rate that pleased my doctor.
Thankfully, both my burns and the dog’s ability to walk on the leash improved, though my husband took on the pleasure of walking the dog after that.
