6 Major Benefits and Uses of Patchouli Essential Oil

1. Ease Inflammation

Inflammation can be caused by many different issues in our lives and manifest in a wide variety of symptoms. Many people find that they can suffer from joint and muscle pain that has no obvious cause or even digestive issues. Patchouli has been found to help the symptoms of inflammation in different ways. It improves blood flow to an area which can reduce redness and swelling. It may also help block pain signals from reaching the brain. (1)

Patchouli oil can be used as a topical rub after it has been diluted with the carrier oil of your choice. Use anywhere you may have pain and inflammation such as your feet or hands.

2. Fight Infections

When it comes to preventing infections at home, many of us will automatically grab a tube of antibiotic gel, but this can also lead to the development of resistant germs. Patchouli essential oil has been found to be antibacterial as well as antifungal, making it an ideal addition to your household first aid kit. The number of patchouli oil uses for fighting different types of infections stems from its ability to kill different kinds of bacteria, including the foodborne bacteria of listeria and salmonella, and fungi, making it ideal for use in treating conditions like athletes’ foot or candida overgrowth. It can also be found in different types of deodorant as it kills the bacteria that causes bad odor. (2)

3. Uplift Mood

A down mood is a normal, everyday occurrence, as well as the more serious condition of depression. Many people suffer symptoms of these conditions every day and may require some assistance in improving their mood. This even includes anyone who may be under a physician’s care for their symptoms. Patchouli essential oil has been proven to reduce inflammation in the brain, allowing the nerves to process hormones properly. It may also have a slight sedative effect, leading to a reduction in stress. (3)

Patchouli essential oil recipes to assist with improving mood can also include citrus scents that may increase energy as well as mood. Add it to your diffuser to help improve symptoms of a down mood or to supplement medical interventions.

4. Improve Hair Health

People spend hundreds of dollars a year looking to take care of their hair or improve the health of their hair. However, most shampoos and conditioners contain chemicals that can be detrimental to scalp and hair health, even some which are purported to be beneficial still contain preservatives which enable them to be stored for long periods. Patchouli oil benefits your hair and scalp by encouraging blood flow and controlling oil production. Antibacterial properties can also help manage conditions such as psoriasis, which may help your scalp produce new hair or improve the condition of existing hair. (4)

5. Reduce Stomach Issues

There are many different kinds of stomach issues, some of which can be caused by stress or by diet. There are even types of ulcers which can be caused by an infection of the Helicobacter pylori virus, but many people aren’t even aware that they carry these bacteria, nor its effects on their body. Patchouli has been shown to have gastroprotective properties including killing the h. pylori bacteria and easing the inflammation caused by ulcers. It may also assist in cell regeneration, allowing the stomach lining to heal and prevent further irritation of ulcers that have already formed. (5)

6. Insect Repellent

Insects can be more than just annoying pests. In many parts of the world, they are dangers as well, carrying deadly diseases or becoming invasive and destroying habitats. Unfortunately, modern chemical solutions to these issues have resulted in the evolution of resistant insects, which, in turn, leads to the need for stronger and more toxic chemicals for control. To prevent the spread of this issue, oils like patchouli have been studied for their ability to not only kill insects but to repel them and prevent the production of offspring. One of the many patchouli essential oil uses can be in a spray applied to plants around homes to keep pests away from human habitations. (6, 7)

My Favorite Uses For Patchouli Essential Oil

I think anyone who’s ever had the chance to attend college or hang out with friends who went to college has familiarity with the scent of patchouli. It is a scent that has become associated with people who have alternative ideas, and if college isn’t the time for alternative living, I don’t know when is. I know that I bought quite a few patchouli scented incense sticks in my day if only to help cover the scent of the unwashed lacrosse players who happened to live next door in our co-ed quad.

Since college was my only real familiarity with patchouli, I was completely unaware of its other properties. I’ll admit it wasn’t usually my first choice of scents since it reminded me of college bookstores and whole food markets that were whole grain before the whole grain was even a thing. I didn’t have a high opinion of patchouli before I began my use of essential oils.

I’ve begun making many of my own products in the house, particularly cleaning products and bath products. The hardest part has been convincing my husband that using these natural washes is much better for him and his perpetually dry skin than anything we could buy in the store. It probably doesn’t help that I really like the flowery scents and he doesn’t really want to come out of the shower smelling of orange juice or lemon candy. Patchouli has a woody enough scent that blends well with tea tree and even cedarwood to make a scent my husband can live with.
