Tangerine Essential Oil Benefits

As one of the many available citrus oils, tangerine offers a wide range of benefits to your daily life. Its scent can be stimulating yet help you relax or even assist with any issues you may have with digestion. This essential oil can alleviate many common issues you may encounter as you go about your day.

1. Relaxing and calming

Busy work and home lives may lead to feelings of stress and anxiety that seem to overwhelm us. Essential oils have been used in aromatherapy in cultures across the world to alleviate these issues. Citrus scents are known for their relaxing properties that allow for the release of chemicals in the brain that reduces anxiousness, and tangerine oil may have the same effect. Studies for aromatherapy treatments of anxiety have shown that tangerine may cause a feeling of calm or relief of stressful emotions as reported by subjects who inhaled the scent. This may be due to the release of neurochemicals that can produce a feeling of euphoria. (1)

2. Ease the digestive process

Digestive distress can be caused by several environmental factors from the food we eat, diseases, or even as side effects from medical treatments or medications. The component limonene in tangerine essential oil reduces inflammation that may cause overproduction of mucous lining of the stomach and intestines. This may also ease any symptoms that occur from foods that can agitate the digestive tract, causing inflammation, pain, and bloating. It has been shown to ease the symptoms of ulcerative colitis in rats, reducing the occurrence of ulcers and inflammatory markers. (2) It may also prevent inflammation as a side effect from certain medications.

3. Antiseptic

Using plant-based chemicals as cleansing agents is not a new idea but has become even more important in the face of the development of bacteria and diseases that have become immune to manufactured solutions. As stronger chemicals are developed, bacteria may also become more resistant in turn. In a study of essential oils that are effective against commonly occurring bacterial strains, tangerine oil showed positive for inhibiting the growth of foodborne pathogens such as listeria and e. coli. These findings may indicate that tangerine is a natural alternative for disinfecting and have little to no side effects. (3)

4. Antispasmodic

The smooth muscles of the body, such as the stomach or lungs, perform their functions through involuntary contractions of the muscular tissue. These contractions may also cause pain or discomfort when irritated. Tangerine’s primary constituent is d-limonene, which occurs in oils that have been shown to reduce the number of contractions that occur in the smooth muscles of the body. This may include bronchial muscles in the respiratory system or the muscles of the stomach and intestines. Reduction of spasms may relieve digestive distress such as cramping or respiratory issues like coughing. (4)

5. Skin Tonic

With a combination of antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, tangerine may help keep skin healthy. A study from 1995 shows the effectiveness of two bacteria that can form on the skin, causing painful skin eruptions when skin cells become trapped in clogged pores. Tangerine has been proven effective against staph. epidermidis and propionibacterium acnes, bacteria that can form in pores that have been clogged by sebum, the skin’s natural oil. It also does not trigger the formation of further sebum, and so does not cause further issues with the overproduction of oil. (5)

My Favorite Uses For Tangerine Essential Oil

I have always tried to clean my house as naturally as possible. I’ve never been a huge fan of using wipes that are soaked in chemicals like bleach, no matter how assured I am that I am killing 99% of germs that I find on the hard surfaces of my home. I hated how my hands feel dry and burned when I’d finished using them and the acrid scent that always tries to hide underneath a lemony finish.

The need to clean my house differently led me to a whole family of citrus oils, including lemon, orange, and tangerine. I had already been using lemon and orange pretty regularly, especially since I love how focused I feel when using orange while I clean.

Tangerine essential oil benefits and uses make it a staple in my arsenal for keeping not only my kitchen clean and free from dangerous diseases but also helping to disinfect and deodorize the rest of my house. It leaves a much more pleasant scent behind as well and may help keep the skin of my hands healthy.

It doesn’t hurt that the scent of tangerine and lemon also ease the anxiety that crops up when I feel like I’ll never be able to get my cleaning finished.

I’ve made my own version of wipes with a roll of paper towels, 2 cups of distilled water and 6 drops each of lemon, orange, tangerine, and tea tree oil. This is poured on top of a half roll, the cardboard tube removed and stored in an airtight container. Now even my children can reach in a grab a quick clean up that will keep any bacteria from invading my home.
