What Plant Does Yuzu Essential Oil Come From?

Yuzu fruit comes from an Asian citrus fruit tree of the same name and is related to oranges, grapefruit, and lemons. It grows as a shrub, generally around 6 feet tall and produces small fruit with an uneven rind that can be colored between green or yellow.

Much like other citrus-based essential oils, yuzu essential oil is made from the rind of the yuzu fruit, which resembles a tangerine or mandarin orange with juicy flesh and large seeds. The rind can be cold-pressed or steam distilled for its oil.

The Top 6 Proven Benefits and Uses of Yuzu Essential Oil

1. Improve Mood

Even the happiest people find themselves feeling blue at times, either due to events in their lives or other personal concerns such as an overwhelming amount of work. Using essential oils to help uplift a down mood has been a common practice for centuries in many cultures around the world. Yuzu oil has been proven to help promote a more positive and focused mood, working with the brain to help either produce feel-good hormones such as serotonin or help prevent rapid breakdown of this hormone. This allows the body to feel an up mood for an extended period. (1)

Diffuse yuzu throughout your home and office to help improve mood.

2. Reduce Stress

Even with the advent of helpful technology, we still find ourselves overwhelmed and stressed at times. This state is sometimes accompanied by symptoms such as elevated blood pressure, rapid breaths, and even lack of focus. Yuzu essential oil has been shown to help decrease stress in the body by helping to lower the stress hormone cortisol. This, in turn, helps reduce heart rate and blood pressure. And, just like many of the oils in the citrus family, it has been shown to help improve mental clarity as well. (2)

Combine yuzu oil with other relaxing oils such as lavender to increase your relaxed state of mind. Apply with a carrier oil as part of a massage to release muscle tension.

3. Enhance Food Safety

Food preparation can be the cause of some types of illnesses, but not necessarily because of germs or molds found on those foods. When vegetables are cooked or heated, their chemical structures can be changed. Some veggies produce a substance called NDMA (N-Nitrosodimethylamine) when cooked. This chemical is also a by-product of some industries and can be found in drinking water in small doses. It has been linked to the formation of certain cancers and illnesses and can be highly toxic in large doses. Yuzu prevents the formation of this chemical in certain vegetables, making them safer to ingest and preventing overexposure to NDMA. (3)

4. Skin Care

Your skin is arguably the most important organ in your body. It is the first line of defense against infections and helps regulate internal temperature. It is also the first thing that others notice when they meet you and the state of our skin can be a cause for embarrassment or shame. Using yuzu essential oil to care for your skin can assist in a multitude of ways. Like many oils, yuzu has antimicrobial properties that can help clear away bacteria trapped in the pores as well as reducing redness and inflammation caused by infected pores. It has also been shown to prevent cell damage and may even help repair previous cellular issues. (4)

You can add yuzu to your current moisturizers or astringents to take part in the benefits for your skin. You can also add 1-2 drops to about a teaspoon of carrier oil such as coconut to make your own moisturizer without chemicals that can dry out your skin.

5. Ease Asthma Symptoms

Asthma is a serious health condition where several environmental factors can cause acute inflammation of the lungs and airway. This makes it difficult or impossible to breathe regularly and can lead to hospitalization or death. It can be triggered by airborne allergens such as pollen or mold or serious illness like pneumonia. Yuzu essential oil has been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect that helps reduce the inflammation of bronchial tubes during an asthma attack. This opens the airway, allowing for improved lung function. (5)

Diffuse in your home and office to prevent any asthma symptoms and kill any potential molds that may trigger an attack.

6. Pain Management

Modern medicine has produced a number of the over the counter treatments for pain, each with their own benefits and side effects. However, all of them are only meant to be used in a short-term capacity and may not even affect all types of pain. Essential oils like yuzu can be applied topically and have been found to block the pain signals along the nerves to the brain. Anti-inflammatory constituents reduce the body’s natural response to injury, reducing pain and time required to heal. (6)

Add 1-2 drops to a carrier oil such as jojoba to make a topical pain relief oil. Apply as often as needed.

My Favorite Uses For Yuzu Essential Oil

Citrus oils are some of my absolute favorites, for just about any possible application. I always have a full bottle of lemon and orange, ready to keep my kitchen germ free and bergamot works alongside lavender to calm my mind and allow me to work without stress or anxiety interfering. Yuzu essential oil has joined that lineup.

It blends seamlessly with any other citrus, being lightly scented itself. It can be lost behind lemon but works alongside to help cut through the grease on my stove and kill any possible foodborne pathogens hiding on my kitchen counters.

My children have enjoyed yuzu when they are trying to study or work on longer games whereas before they would have lost interest only a few minutes in. It has been added to my super focus mix that I diffuse when deadlines are looming, combining easily with some lavender and chamomile for some relaxation underneath all that energy.

Yuzu has also started to replace the stronger smelling lemon or orange in my facial creams. Using it on my skin allows me to enjoy the scent all day long, even if I don’t have a chance to diffuse it around the office. It’s almost a double whammy since I tend to break out in spots of acne when I’m stressed and yuzu helps keep the inflammation under control as well as the anxious feelings.
